With Father's Day coming this weekend, the overwhelming majority of Americans remain quite clear that being a dad is serious business. Three-out-of-four (75%) American adults say being a father is the most important role a man can fill in today’s world. A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that just 14% disagree and 12% are not sure. Those figures are largely unchanged from a Father's Day survey last year. By comparison, a Mother's Day survey conducted last month found that two-out-of-three (66%) adults believe being a mother is a woman's most important role. Just 17% disagree, while 16% are not sure. Not surprisingly, men (78%) are slightly more likely than women (72%) to think being a father is the most important role for men. In the Mother’s Day poll, the opposite was true: More women (72%) than men (60%) said being a mother is a woman's number one job. Most married adults (76%) and adults with children at home (79%) also say being a father is a man's most important role. But nearly as many non-married adults (72%) and adults without children in the home (72%) agree. Similarly, 68% of married adults and 79% of adults with children at home say being a mother is a woman's most important job, compared to 65% of non-married adults and 57% of those without children living with them.
