In the digital era, is it possible that books are still number 1?

That’s one interpretation of a May 18 Rasmussen Reports lifestyle survey. Two-out-of-three American adults (69%) say they’ve recently read a book. Forty-six percent (46%) have recently rented or bought a movie to watch at home and 40% have gone to a children’s event such as little league games, school plays, or recitals.

For those with children living at home, reading a book and attending a children’s event are equally likely.

When it comes to activity outside the home, just 29% have gone to see a movie in a theater, 19% have gone out to watch live music, and 14% have been a fan at a pro sports event.

Two thirds of those who have seen a movie in a theater have also picked up movies for viewing at home. Those who don’t go to movies in a theater are far less likely to make the Blockbusters run to rent a movie.

Women are more likely than men to have read a book. Adults under 30 are less likely to have done so than their elders.

Seventy-three percent (73%) of married Americans have recently read a book along with 64% of those who are not married.
