Nearly two-thirds (65%) of Americans say they eat dinner with family members at least twice a week, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey. Thirty-eight percent (38%) say they eat with members of their family more than three times a week, while 27% say they do so two or three times in a typical week. Another 10% say they dine with family members once every week. Just 22% say they rarely or never have dinner with members of their family in a typical week. Whether they're eating with family members or not, the majority of adults (56%) say they’re going out to eat less often today than they did six months ago. Only five percent (5%) say they’re enjoying more meals out. Thirty-eight percent (38%) say they’re eating at restaurants as often as they did then. These findings seem to parallel the ongoing uncertainty in the economy since they are virtually identical to what Americans told us last November. (Want a free daily e-mail update? Forty-two percent (42%) of women say they dine with family members more than three times a week, compared to 33% of men. Nearly half of those ages 30 to 39 (47%) say the same, the highest level among all age groups. Eighty percent (80%) of adults living with children say they eat at home with family members two or more times a week, compared to 52% of those without children in the home. Perhaps not surprisingly, 63% of adults with children in the home are eating out less often, while just 51% of those without children living with them say the same. In a typical week, nearly half (49%) of adults now say they rarely or never go out to a restaurant for dinner, up five points from last November. One-third (33%) say they only dine out once a week, while 11% say they do so two or three times a week, down seven points from the earlier survey. Four percent (4%) eat dinner out more than three times in an average week. Women are much more likely than men to say they rarely or never go out for dinner. Fifty-seven percent (57%) of those who are not married say they rarely or never go out to dine versus 45% of married adults. But then 76% of all adults enjoy a good home cooked meal more than dining at a fine restaurant. Just 17% prefer a restaurant more. Adults between 18 and 29 prefer home cooked meals more than any other age group. Rising food prices could be a reason why adults are dining out less these days. A separate Rasmussen Reports survey found 81% are concerned about inflation. Nearly the same percentage (80%) say they’re paying more for groceries now than they did a year ago, and 62% expect to spend more money on groceries a year from now.
