Eighty-percent (80%) of Americans believe that individuals learn more practical skills through life experience and work rather than through college. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that 9% disagree and say more is learned in college.

Younger adults place more emphasis on college. Among those under 30, 20% say more learning takes place in a campus environment.

Democrats are more likely than Republicans to say college teaches more. Those not affiliated with either major party are more likely to say that life experience matters more.

Twenty-two percent (22%) of government employees see college as providing more skills. That view is shared by just 8% of those who work in the private sector.

Survey data released yesterday found that 56% of adults believe that every American should attend college or vocational school. Most also believe that just about all good students can find a way to attend college. Opinion is divided as to whether the government should focus on helping the best and brightest or helping low-income students.

Fifty-seven percent (57%) of voters say that education is a Very Important issue to them. Democrats are consistently trusted more than Republicans when it comes to education.

Earlier surveys have found that 43% agree with President Obama’s call for national curriculum and grading standards. At the same time, most voters say teachers’ unions are more focused on jobs than education.
