Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Nearly half of Americans (48%) say they’ll wear green to honor the holiday, 20% will mark the occasion with a drink. Women (54%) are far more likely to wear green than men (42%). Men (23%) are somewhat more likely than women (17%) to have a drink. A recent Rasmussen Reports survey of 1,000 adults also found that 7% of Americans will attend a St. Patty’s Day parade and 13% will go to a party. The day is commemorated in honor of the patron saint of Ireland on the anniversary of his death. St. Patrick’s Day became a national holiday in 1780 when George Washington allowed Irish soldiers in the Continental Army to take the day off. The survey also revealed that just 7% consider St. Patrick’s Day as one of the nation’s most important holidays. That’s compared to 55% who deem the holiday as one of the least important. Thirty-four percent (34%) think it’s somewhere in between. Christmas and the Fourth of July are considered to be the country’s most important holidays. Crosstabs available for Premium Members only.
