Nearly one-out-of-three Americans (32%) say they have not filled a prescription because the cost was too high, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey. But 62% say cost has never stopped them from filling a doctor’s prescription. Women (37%) are more likely to have been unable to afford a prescription than men (26%). More adults under the age of 40 say they’ve skipped a prescription because of cost than have older Americans. Thirty-seven percent (37%) of those with children at home say they’ve not filed a prescription because of the cost, compared to 27% of those not living with children. Fifty percent (50%) of those earning less than $20,000 per year say cost has kept them from filling a prescription. (Want a free daily e-mail update? If it's in the news, it's in our polls). Rasmussen Reports updates are also available on Twitter. Wal-Mart is one of the companies trying to lure customers into its stores by offering discount drugs, and 73% of adults say they have read, seen or heard about Wal-Mart’s $4 prescription plan for generic drugs. Twenty-three percent (23%) have not heard of the plan. Just 15% say they have filled a prescription at Wal-Mart under this plan, while 84% have not. Those earning less than $40,000 per year are at least twice as likely to have filled a prescription under Wal-Mart’s $4 plan than those who earn more than that annually. Most Americans have a favorable opinion of Wal-Mart and say its presence is good for a community. When Wal-Mart first rolled out its $4 prescription plan in the fall of 2006, 48% of Americans said it had the potential to reduce the cost of prescription drugs across the country. In a survey in March, 37% of Americans said they had postponed a medical procedure in the past six months to save money.
