Sixty-nine percent (69%) of Americans say that the price of gasoline has impacted their summer vacation plans. The impact is biggest on younger and lower-income Americans. Among those who earn less than $40,000 a year, fully 80% say gas prices have impacted their plans. Just 37% of Americans say that they plan to take a summer vacation this year. That’s down dramatically from 55% two years ago. In addition to higher gas prices, consumer confidence has fallen sharply since 2006. As measured by the Rasmussen Consumer Index, confidence is currently hovering just above the lowest levels of the past seven years. Among those who will take a vacation, 27% say they will communicate via e-mail at least once a day. Twice as many, 53%, say they will rarely or never e-mail on vacation. Thirty-one percent (31%) say they will visit relatives, 26% will go to the beach for vacation, and 17% will head to the mountains. Just 9% say that concerns about terrorism will affect their travel plans this year. Two years ago, 8% said the same. In 2006, 58% said that high gas prices would impact their travel plans.
