In the battle of the blockbusters, Batman came out on top. A Rasmussen Reports survey of moviegoers nationally found that 41% voted The Dark Knight the summer's best action film. Even better news for the comic classic, the movie this past weekend became only the second in Hollywood history to cross the $500 million mark at the U.S. box office. In a distant second, Iron Man was voted best action film by 15%, while 13% chose Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Bottoming out the list were The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor at 8%, Hancock at 7% and The Incredible Hulk at a mere -- and statistically insignificant -- one percent. In the comedy category, movie fans were divided. Seventeen percent (17%) sang the praises of Mamma Mia! Not surprisingly, women (25%) favored the film more than men (9%). DreamWorks’ animated picture, Kung Fu Panda, was close at 16%, as was the Ben Stiller comedy Tropic Thunder. HBO’s feature film Sex and the City, Get Smart starring Steve Carell and Will Ferrell’s Step Brothers each received seven percent (7%) of the votes for best comedy of the summer, while Adam Sandler’s flick You Don’t Mess with the Zohan snipped five percent (5%). Even though 74% believe movie tickets are too expensive, a separate survey found that 55% still went to watch at least one feature film in a movie theater this summer. Munchies are often a movie must. Most adults (59%) say they buy snacks at the movies, but 28% admit that they bring their own. Men (65%) tend to buy snacks slightly more than women (53%), although it is unclear whether they were buying them just for themselves or for themselves and their significant other. Finally, when it comes to the quality of feature films, 39% say movies are getting better than they were 10 years ago. Twenty-nine percent (29%) feel they’re getting worse, while 27% believe they’re staying about the same. See survey questions and toplines. Crosstabs are available to Premium Members only.
