This Friday, 72% of adults plan on celebrating the 232nd birthday of the United States by watching fireworks. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that a quarter of adults (24%) think it unlikely they will attend a fireworks show.

Younger adults are much more likely than their elders to attend a fireworks display. While 91% of adults between the ages of 18 and 29 say it is likely they will see fireworks, just 49% of adults over the age of 65 plan to do the same. Eighty percent (80%) of adults in their 30’s, 72% of adults in their 40’s, and 66% of adults ages 50-64 say they will attend a fireworks display this year.

As for other activities to celebrate Independence Day, most adults (59%) plan on attending barbeques with family or friends over the holiday weekend, while just 15% plan on attending or marching in a July 4th parade.

Just under a third (31%) say they will sing patriotic songs this weekend. More Republicans (43%) than Democrats (21%) plan on marking the occasion in this way.

Most adults (80%) plan on staying home for the weekend of the Fourth of July. Just 15% plan on traveling. The percentage of adults who plan on stay home this year has risen slightly from 77% last year. A separate Rasmussen survey released in May found that 69% of adults say high gas prices have impacted their summer vacation plans.

A poll released this week found three out of four Americans are proud of America’s history, but under half (46%) believe the United States is truly a land of liberty and justice for all. Ninety-one percent (91%) say they would vote to keep the Constitution if an election were held today. Most agree with the basic truths expressed in the Declaration of Independence, but they’re not sure who presided at the Continental Congress.

Another survey released today found that 59% consider Independence Day to be one of the nation’s most important holidays.
