Madonna’s certainly no stranger to media coverage. Her highly publicized split with husband Guy Ritchie is the hottest show biz gossip going.

While the diva draws a lot of attention in her profession, many adults aren’t crazy for Madonna for various reasons. According to a new Rasmussen Reports survey, only 15% think Madonna is a good role model for women. Most (61%) disagree. Perhaps surprisingly, men and women poll identically on this question.

Just eight percent (8%) consider the “Frozen” singer to be the greatest pop star of all time. Seventy-nine percent (79%) say otherwise. A greater percentage (18%) of African-Americans compared to whites (5%) cherish the performer by labeling her the best pop star ever.

Madonna is certainly not afraid to express herself. Two years ago, she was criticized for suspending herself from a giant cross and wearing a crown of thorns. At that time, 32% held a favorable opinion of the superstar. Fifty-six percent (56%) had an unfavorable opinion of her.

Despite reports of an affair with Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez amidst her crumbling marriage, 38% currently rate Madonna favorably. Fifty-three percent (53%) have a somewhat unfavorable or very unfavorable opinion of her. Men under 40 (54%) have a slightly more favorable view of her than women under 40 (48%).

This year, Madonna bashed Republican presidential nominee John McCain by comparing him to Adolf Hitler. A survey taken in early September showed that only a third (33%) felt musicians and actors should voice their opinions during their performances.

Despite the bad press, a solid majority of adults (65%) say Madonna is not too old to be performing. Just 17% disagree. More young adults feel Madonna is too old to perform than their elders.

Most adults (53%) have read, seen or heard news stories about Madonna, although 40% say they have not. Women (57%) tend to follow articles on Madonna more often than men (49%).
