Partisan Economics: Democrats, GOP See Different Economy

Over the past year, overall levels of consumer confidence have bounced around a lot but ended up with little change. For the full month June 2008, the Rasmussen Consumer Index was at 71.9. In June, 2009, that number was 72:0.

But underneath those stable topline numbers is a dramatic shift along party lines. A year ago, Republicans were far more confident than Democrats. Today, the reverse is true.

Among Democrats, the Rasmussen Consumer Index jumped from 53.7 a year ago to 79.5 in 2009.

Among Republicans, confidence was at 99.4 a year ago and it’s fallen to 68.6 today.

As for those not affiliated with either major party, there’s been little change.

Democrats in June 2009 are evenly divided as to whether the economy is getting better or worse.

By a 58% to 20% margin, Republicans say the economy is getting worse. Among unaffiliateds, 54% say the economy is getting worse while 22% say it is getting better.

While there are big differences about where the economy is headed, there is little difference about the state of the economy today. Nine percent (9%) of Republicans rate the economy as good or excellent while 10% of Democrats say the same. Those not affiliated with either major party are a bit less upbeat.

While these numbers are from monthly compilations, the Rasmussen Consumer Index is updated daily.

Recent polling showed that just 42% of voters give President Barack Obama good or excellent marks for handling the economy. He earns positive reviews from 75% of Democrats and 18% of Republicans (see crosstabs).

The Rasmussen Consumer Index reached its highest level ever at 127.0 on January 6, 2004. The all-time low was reached on March 10, 2009 at 54.7.

The Rasmussen Investor Index reached its highest level ever at 150.9 on January 7, 2004. The lowest level ever measured was 52.5 on March 9, 2009.

The baseline for the Rasmussen Consumer Index was established at 100.0 in October 2001.
