Fifty percent (50%) of U.S. voters now say they are more worried that the government will do too much in reacting to the nation’s economic problems rather than not enough. That’s a seven-point jump from a month ago and the highest level of concern in this direction since Election Day. Forty percent (40%) are more concerned that the government will not do enough, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey. Most investors (53%) worry that the government will do too much, while non-investors are evenly divided in their concerns. Seventy-two percent (72%) of Republicans and 55% of unaffiliated voters are concerned that that the government will do too much trying to fix the economy. The partisan divide is huge on this point as 59% of Democrats fear that the government will not do enough. (Want a free daily e-mail update? If it's in the news, it's in our polls.) Rasmussen Reports updates also available on Twitter. In early January, voters were evenly divided on this question. Last September, right after the first call for massive bank bailouts, 63% percent were worried the government would do too much. At that time, only 25% feared too little government action. 8 But as Wall Street’s problems became more public and the financial situation worsened, concerns about government action lessened. While the President continues to earn good ratings in the Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll, voters remain closely divided over his $3.6-trillion budget, worrying about the large amount of spending it proposes. Voters also have consistently frowned on the various bailout measures. Still the economy remains Americans’ number one concern, and most now think the United States is at least somewhat likely to enter a 1930’s-like depression within the next few years.
