Fifty-two percent (52%) of voters say the stimulus package is at least somewhat likely to help the economy. However, only 12% say it is Very Likely to do so. Republicans are a bit more optimistic than Democrats and unaffiliated voters.

Debate over the stimulus package comes as the Rasmussen Consumer Index shows consumer confidence to be near the lowest levels of the past five years. Despite the low level of confidence in the economy, 32% of voters say it is at least somewhat likely the stimulus package will make things worse.

Fifty-three percent (53%) of voters believe they will get a tax rebate under the proposed economic stimulus plan. Eighteen percent (18%) say they will not while 29% are not sure.

An earlier national telephone survey found that the economy is the top voting issue of Election 2008. While voters agree on the importance of the economy, there is less agreement on what that means. Fifty-three percent (53%) say it’s most important to create economic growth while 40% say it’s more important to reduce the income gap between rich and poor.
