Election 2012: Obama 48%, Bachmann 35%

Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, the frontrunner in Iowa and New Hampshire, now trails President Obama in a hypothetical Election 2012 matchup.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of Likely Voters finds Obama earning 44% support to Romney’s 41%.  Seven percent (7%) prefer some other candidate, while eight percent (8%) are not sure.  (To see survey question wording, click here.)

Last week, Romney held a slight 43% to 42% edge over the president.  The two candidates have been essentially tied in regular surveys since January, though Romney remains the only GOP hopeful to lead Obama in more than one survey to date.  During 2011, Romney has earned support ranging from 38% to 45% while Obama has received 40% to 46% of the vote.

In head-to-head matchups with other GOP hopefuls, the president leads by as little as seven and as much as 15 percentage points.  Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, Texas Governor Rick Perry and businessman Herman Cain have all surged ahead of the president at one point, but did not maintain their respective leads.

While the president currently edges a generic Republican candidate, this is only the third time he’s been ahead since weekly tracking began in late May.
