Russo Poised to Attract Anti-War Votes

Nineteen percent (19%) of Americans would consider voting for Aaron Russo if they knew he would end the War in Iraq and bring our troops home. Russo is a candidate for the Libertarian Party Presidential nomination. If those surveyed knew that Russo was the only candidate who opposed a military draft, he would attract 14% of the vote in a three-way race with George Bush and John Kerry. These results are from a national telephone survey of 500 adults conducted by Rasmussen Reports on May 23, 2004. The margin of sampling error is +/- 4.5 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. The survey was commissioned by Aaron Russo for President. The survey strongly suggests that Libertarians may be able to attract support from those actively opposed to the War with Iraq. While 19% will consider voting for Russo after learning of his commitment to end the War and oppose the draft, five percent (5%) of voters said they would consider Russo before knowing those positions. No Libertarian candidate has ever attracted 5% of the vote in a Presidential Election. The Libertarian Party will select their nominee at a national convention that begins Thursday, May 27, in Atlanta. Russo does especially well among Americans who do not normally participate in the electoral process. Among those who do usually vote, just 39% say they would not vote for the Libertarian under any circumstances. Additionally, when non-voters are told that Russo is the only candidate to firmly oppose a military draft, he attracts more support from these disaffected Americans than John Kerry. The survey also found that just 35% of Americans believe that Libertarian candidates receive enough media coverage. Forty-eight percent (48%) sat they do not receive enough coverage. Most voters (55%) believe that, if Russo is the Libertarian Party candidate, he should be included in the Presidential debates along with Ralph Nader.
