In Maine, the race for the White House is as close as it can be. The latest Rasmussen Reports survey finds Senator Kerry with 46% of the vote and President Bush with 45%. Four years ago, Al Gore defeated Bush to carry Maine by a 49% to 44% margin. Our last survey in Maine found Senator Kerry with a huge lead. At the time, we thought that the selection of a candidate from neighboring Massachusetts would give the Democrats an even bigger advantage in Maine this time around. As a result of this new data, we are moving Maine from "Leans Kerry" to the "Toss-up" category for our Electoral College projections. Kerry has secured the vote from just 76% of Maine Democrats. Bush is supported by 86% of the state's Republicans. Among those who are not affiliated with either political party, Kerry leads 45% to 39%. In Maine, 52% of all voters Approve of the way President Bush is performing his job. That's up from 43% a month ago and slightly above his national Job Approval rating. Among voters who are not affiliated with either major political party, 49% give the President's performance their Approval. Data for Maine will be updated again early next month. Our recent state releases included Alabama, Arkansas, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia, and Washington.
