Nevada Governor: Gibbons (R) by 5

The race for Nevada Governor remains competitive. But Republican Congressman Jim Gibbons has slightly turned the tables on the Democratic Mayor of Henderson, Jim Gibson.

In the latest Rasmussen Reports election poll, Gibbons now leads Gibson 43% to 38%. In early December, Gibson (D) had led Gibbons (R) by three percentage points.

The spread between Gibbons and Democratic State Senator Dina Titus has changed little. Gibbons leads 46% to 41%, whereas in December Gibbons led the Minority Leader 45% to 39%.

Gibbons is viewed favorably by 55%, unfavorably by 34%. Titus is viewed favorably by 46%, unfavorably by 38%. A quarter of voters are unsure what to think of Gibson. About as many voters view him favorably as unfavorably: 37%. That's a decline since December, when 43% reported a favorable view.

Fifty-two percent (52%) of Nevada voters got their wish as far as Judge Samuel Alito is concerned, saying he should be confirmed to the Supreme Court. The survey was conducted before Alito was confirmed, but the results are similar to other states. On a national basis, few Americans expect Alito to effect any sea change in the high court.

Forty percent (40%) of Nevada voters say President Bush is doing a good or excellent job with the economy. Opinions of his performance in Iraq are comparable.

Overall, Bush does a little better, getting 47% approval and 53% disapproval. That's in the same range as his national Job Approval ratings.
