Wisconsin Governor: Doyle Leads Green By Eight

After two previous polls showed his overall numbers unchanged, incumbent Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle (D) has added two points to his lead over Republican Congressman Mark Green and now leads in his re-election race 49% to 41% (see crosstabs). This time, it’s Green whose number remain unchanged from last month’s survey.

Though he’s yet to crack the 50% mark, this is Doyle’s strongest showing since polling for this race begin in December. Green’s high point was 43% in April.

Doyle is pulling stronger support from his base with 83% of Democrats saying they support their governor’s bid for another term. Seventy-seven percent (77%) of GOP voters say they’ll choose Green. Doyle narrowly wins the contest for crossover support earning nods from 15% of Republicans compared to 12% of Dems who say they’ll switch sides and vote for Green.

Twenty percent (20%) of voters say they have a very favorable opinion of Doyle and 19% say the same of Green. However, 23% report very unfavorable views of Green versus 18% who see Doyle in the same light.

Nineteen percent (19%) strongly approve of Doyle’s performance as Governor and 22% strongly disapprove.
