June 16, 2005--On the day following
Virginia's Primary Elections, Republican Jerry Kilgore leads Democrat
Tim Kaine by six percentage points in the race to become Virginia's
next Governor.
Kilgore earns 46% of the vote, Kaine
attracts 40%, and 2% say they will vote for some other candidate.
Two months ago, Kilgore had an
eight point lead and 5% supported a third party option.
In the nation's only other race for
Governor in 2005, Democrat Jon Corzine has a 7-point lead in
New Jersey.
Forty-seven percent (47%) of Virginia
voters have a favorable opinion of Kilgore. That's down slightly from 49%
in the previous survey. Thirty-three percent (33%) have an unfavorable
opinion while 20% are not sure.
For Kaine, the numbers are 43%
favorable, 33% unfavorable, and 24% not sure. Those numbers are
little changed from two months ago.
The state's current Governor, Democrat
Mark Warner, is viewed favorably by 63% of the state's voters.
Thirty-one (31%) have an unfavorable view.
In the race for Governor, 10% of
Republicans are undecided along with 5% of Democrats.
Voters who approve of the way President
Bush is handling his job favor Kilgore 76% to 11%. Those who
disapprove of the President's performance favor Kaine, 73% to 11%.
The telephone survey of 500 Likely
Voters was conducted Wednesday night, June 15, 2005. The margin of
sampling error is +/- 4.5 percentage points, with a 95% level of
confidence.
