Survey of 500 Likely Voters November 7, 2005

November 12, 2005--Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell has gained ground since the summer in his bid for re-election. Rendell leads former Pittsburgh Steelers star Lynn Swann by fourteen percentage points--50% to 36%. In our July survey, Swann was just six points behind the Governor. The latest Rasmussen Reports survey also shows Rendell holding an eight point edge, 47% to 39%, over former Lt. Governor Bill Scranton III. That's up from a four point lead in the summer. Swann is viewed favorably by 49% of voters in the Keystone State and unfavorably by 33%. His support in the African-American community has declined significantly since summer. Scranton is viewed favorably by 46% of voters and unfavorably by 35%. For Rendell, the numbers are more positive--53% favorable and 37% unfavorable. [NOTE: CrossTabs and additional data available for Premium Members] The other big race in Pennsylvania next year is for the U.S. Senate. Incumbent Rick Santorum is living up to his reputation as the most vulnerable incumbent at this point in the 2006 election cycle. In the Keystone State, the President’s Job Approval is at 37%, slightly below his national average. Sixty-one percent (61%) disapprove, including 48% who Strongly Disapprove. Just 25% of Pennsylvania voters give the President good or excellent marks for handling the economy. Twenty-one percent (21%) say he is doing a fair job, while 52% say poor. Governor Ed Rendell has a 57% Approval Rating. Forty-one percent (41%) Disapprove of the way the Democrat is handling his job. By a 44% to 24% margin, Pennsylvania voters say that Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito should be confirmed. Demographic details are available for Premium Members.
