May 30, 2005--Forty-nine percent (49%) say
they will do something special this weekend to "celebrate Memorial Day and
honor those who have given their life for our country." Five years ago,
in the era before the 9/11 terrorist attacks, just 37% made such plans.
Thirty-six percent (36%) of Americans have a
close friend or relative who has given their life while serving in the
U.S. military. Among those who have suffered such a loss, 64% are making
special plans for Memorial Day weekend.
Forty-six percent (46%) of
American adults say that Memorial Day is one of our nation's most
important holidays. Just 10% say it is one of our least important while
39% place it somewhere in between.
Among veterans, 59% consider Memorial Day one
of our most important holidays.
Americans who have lost a close friend or
relative can be found in similar numbers among many demographic
groups--37% of men, 36% of women; 36% of married Americans, 38% of those
who are not married; 37% of Investors, 36% of non-Investors; 37% of those
who are white, 36% of those who are not; and, 39% of Republicans, 37% of
Democrats.
Forty-seven percent (47%) of those over 65
knew a close friend or relative who gave their life serving our country.
Thirty-seven percent (37%) of those 50-64 suffered the same loss along
with 32% of those under 30.
Fifty-seven percent (57%) of veterans have
lost a close friend or relative in military service.
A separate release showed that 67% of
Americans hold a favorable opinion of the
U.S. military.
